The Yang Style is the second in terms of age. It was developed by Yang Luchan (1799-1872) who learn from Chen Changxin. The style is rather different from Chen’s. Some say that Yang built up his style with both Chen Changxin and Jiang Fa methods. Others say that he merged Chen Style with his previous skills in Shaolin.

There are several variations of the Yang Style. Only a few preserve the low postures that it is presumed Yang Luchan and his sons Banhou and Chienhou practiced, as well as fajin discharges in the long forms.

Generally, the style is practiced in a slow and steady manner, with soft and expansive movements and with a medium or high posture. It is classified as Yang Small Frame those variations grown on Banhou’s teachings, where Hao Style was latter developed,

plus those of Yang Shaohou, son of Chienhou.Yang Chengfu is known as the one who spread the most both the Yang Style and Taiji, in the first half of last century.

Most of Yang substyles derive from Chengfu’s. There are also other substyles practiced out of China. The Yang Large Frame, the most widely practiced on China and abroad, comes from Yang Chengfu, the third son of Chienhou.
